Meet Christine Luwum from Suubi

"I was born in Jinja in 1981, where I lived in Bukaya. When I was 1 year old my parents divorced and my mother married another man, and she went to live with him and us in the north. One day the LRA came and killed my mother, and they abducted my stepfather. Then I was taken to my uncle also in the north, where I lived until 1994, and then I went to Jinja again. I became pregnant when I was still living at home, and in 2003 I married my husband, whom I had met in church. He enrolled me in some short courses while he was working, and that is why I studied tailoring and computing. When I finished the courses I went back home and remained there without a job. We were both unemployed when Santa told my mother in law about Suubi and that’s how I got enrolled. At first I didn’t know how to make the beads, so I had to learn everything. Suubi has meant a lot in my life. It has taught me how to live in a community, and it has given me hope and the pride of knowing that every week I can afford to pay for things and that people will find me reliable. I am very grateful to Suubi for all this." - Christine Luwum from Suubi
